End to Schengen visa for Serbs in sight
May 01 2009 by Gareth McConnell
Citizens from Serbia may be allowed to enter Schengen countries without
a visa by the end of 2009, the EU enlargement chief has announced.
The Schengen visa zone is an area spanning 25 European countries
hosting the removal of border controls to encourage free trade and
movement and issuing a common visa to third party countries not already
signed up.
Most members of the Schengen visa area are members of the EU, except for Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. The UK and Ireland, members of the EU, have opted out of the Schengen agreement.
Citizens of countries not members must apply for a Schengen visa before travelling to a member country, the visa allows the holder to visit any member country for the period of validity of the document.
Serbia has been nominated by Italy and several other Eastern and Central European countries, with EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn expressing his belief the changes be implemented by July 1.
