England is first choice for UK visa holders

New figures obtained by the cross-party Balanced Migration Group, from Commons written answers, have found that the overwhelming majority of UK visa holders settle in England.

Between 1991 and 2007, 2.34 million immigrants successfully applied to UK immigration to start a new life. Of these, a huge 2.15 million came to England, a massive 92%.

In the future, the population of Scotland is expected to fall and, as a result, the country may be feeling the pressure to attract more immigrants to settle there to boost the economy and fill gaps in the labour market brought about by an ageing, shrinking population.

In contrast, the population of England is expected to increase by a further 16 million by 2051. England is expected to take up to 95% of the immigrants coming into the UK over the coming 40 years.

The populations of both Wales and Northern Ireland are expected to grow slightly, although this increase is expected to be mostly domestic, as opposed to being generated through increased UK immigration.
