Export Yourself To New Zealand

Should New Zealand follow in the same footsteps of Australia's aggressive advertising to lure skilled workers?

New Zealand has often been referred to as a "country of immigrants." 21st century New Zealand is trying to balance the amount of skilled workers leaving and entering the country. In essence New Zealand is loosing more and more of its young, skilled natives, according to Richard Bedford Convenor of the Migration Research Group, University of Waikato.

Global Visas and immigration laws are constantly changing and New Zealand has become an immigration player amongst the "four "traditional lands of immigration" (Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand)" emphasising its place as a diverse and bicultural country. Since 2002 immigration debates have cantered around multiculturalism and on the fact that the majority of immigrants accepted for residence within the country have been from countries in Asia (especially China and India).

Immigration Stats New Zealand

According to Statistics New Zealand, (2008) Demographic Trends: 2007, the estimated resident population of New Zealand at 30 June 2007 was 4,228,300.

Foreign immigrant's movement reached a new height when the year ended June 2007, with 8.9 million passenger movements in total. There were 4.460 million arrivals and 4.449 million departures. Overseas visitors accounted for 55 percent of these movements, New Zealand residents accounted for 43 percent, and permanent and long-term migrants accounted for the other 2 percent.

The total arrivals and departures of migrants have increased by over 3.5 million in the 10 years since 1997, at an average annual growth rate of 5.1 percent.

People who come to New Zealand intending to stay for a longer period tend to be younger than who come on a short visit. The report from Statistics New Zealand states that "there was a net Period Life Table (PLT) inflow from the United Kingdom of 9,429. (The United Kingdom was the largest source country for PLT arrivals, with 21,378 immigrants arriving in the June 2007 year). There were also net inflows from the Philippines (3,104), India (2,790), Fiji (2,357), South Africa (1,672), China (1,593), Germany (1,551) and Japan (1,409).

Although there are a lot of foreigners coming into New Zealand for tourism purposes, luring them to stay permanently will become a challenge.

New Zealand has land beauty that is untapped, and the standard of living is high. Issa Gomez travelled New Zealand for three months and said "It is a beautiful country, with vast and vast of land. You can drive for a long time without seeing any high rise buildings. It was very peaceful and relaxed and the people were very friendly. Its definitely a place I would consider relocating to."

Liam Clifford Company Director of www.globalvisas.com believes that people often don't get the right information when making an important decision like relocating overseas. www.globalvisas.com  is at the frontier of global mobility because we understand how immigration and visa laws work and how they apply to individuals wanting to immigrate. This country has become an alternative for those riding the wave of mobile labour. New Zealanders are blessed with great landscape, sport and culture. More the reason why people should take advantage of what it has to offer."
  • New Zealand continues to be one of the countries in the world who are experiencing an economic brain drain. Brain drain which is human capital flight; this is when talented, educated and skilled individuals immigrate to other countries.

This drain of migrating skilled people can put a strain on the economy and on industries hence New Zealand is pushing hard to try and lure skilled, educated and talented individuals to its shores.

New Zealand youth travel overseas on the infamous two-year work and travel visa which allows them to work and travel in London. In some cases New Zealand natives apply for the ancestral visa if they have a grandparent of English birth and never return home. This is one of the facts contributing to the brain drain in the country. The New Zealand government released an immediate skills shortage list, which states their in need skills.
