Olivia Chow, a Canadian MP based in Toronto, has founded a Facebook group in order to pressure the government into launching a fair appeals facility for people who have had their Canadian visitor visa applications rejected.

There are currently 200,000 Canada visa applications, from foreigners who wish to visit and move to Canada, rejected each year. Some are applying to live in Canada temporarily with a close friend, loved one or for a job interview and are kept away after their application falls through. Others are relatives of Canadian citizens who are unable to visit Canada to be closer to their family.

Chow feels that the rejection of many such applications is unjust and that people should have the right to appeal the decisions made against their applications.

Those applying for UK or Australian visas are able to appeal, quickly and fairly, if their application is rejected. The Facebook group, 'Calling for Visitor Visa Fairness', is calling upon people to share their stories about how their application rejection has impacted their lives.

People applying to visit Canada from visa-required countries must be able to display proof of financial establishment and ties to their home country, which suggest they will return.
