According to a recent study, the majority of people who hold a temporary Australian visa are managers and professionals - particularly those working in the mining industry

The report from the Australian Immigration and Citizenship Department revealed that 90% of temporary skilled workers who hold Australian work permits hold senior positions and earn an average salary of $100,000. This is a year-on-year increase of $10,000.

The most lucrative industry for overseas workers employed on 457 visas is the mining industry. Overseas mining industry professionals in Australia earn an average of $169,000. However these workers represent only 6.5% of people holding this type of Australian visa, even though the mining industry accounted for the majority of job applications in Western Australia.

The financial industry has the second highest wages, with an average salary of $127,000.
Despite the overall rise in the average wage, the total number of approved Australian visas fell by almost half from January 2009 to 2010. The lucrative mining industry also saw a steep fall in the number of overseas workers, recording 1,320 workers from 2009 to 2010 compared with 3210 from 2008 to 2009 – a decline of 58.6%.

The majority of workers employed on 457 visas are Medical and IT professionals, and most are employed in New South Wales and Victoria. The majority of temporary Australia visa applications are from UK residents, the second largest group come from India.
