Four people jailed over UK marriage visa sham

Four people have been jailed for their part in a UK marriage visa scam.

The group of Nigerian and Dutch nationals were caught after UK immigration officers monitored suspicious travel patterns on the part of Adeolu Eletu, a 29-year-old Nigerian.

This followed the earlier arrest of a 21-year-old Dutch woman, Daniloush Solano, who the police caught up with on 10 February at Luton Airport. She had married Eletu earlier the same day in Wood Green in London. Solano was paid EUR1,500 for her role in the marriage.

After this information emerged, another Nigerian - 36-year-old, Sylvernus Ogungbade - was arrested after it became clear that Solano had taken a taxi from his home in Edgware to Luton airport. Ogungbade was living in the UK on a British marriage visa he received after marrying a Dutch woman who is still at large.

The people involved in the sham marriage ring have been sentenced to a total of six years in prison. The UK immigration department stated, "We will not tolerate immigration abuse and, as these convictions demonstrate, our immigration crime teams are creating a hostile environment for those who break the immigration laws."
