Working Abroad Epo held in Ireland

Stephen McLarnon, the organiser of the Working Abroad Expo which is being held in Belfast and Dublin this week, says the Irish government should help to pay for more young Irish people to work in Australia, Canada and other countries that provide working holiday visas and temporary work permits.

Speaking at the Expo’s launch, McLarnon said the Irish government should follow the lead of Lord Mandelson’s UK part funding programme for 500 young people to work abroad on development projects.

McLarnon added that working in South Africa, Australia, Canada and South America can bring fantastic opportunities to develop skills that are highly valued in the work place.

The working abroad expert says that matching the amount of money provided by young people who want to try working abroad would benefit Irish industry by equipping people with cultural, language and work skills that they previously lacked, while helping the young and unemployed.

He stated that offering a ‘gap year matching scheme’ to under-25s "would offer immediate savings to the growing social welfare bill while also assisting young unemployed people to gain new experiences and return to Ireland with something to offer.”
