Napolitano supports DREAM Act
America’s Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, has again called for comprehensive US immigration reform “from border security and interior enforcement to reform of our visa programs and legalization for illegal workers.”
During her testimony before the Senate
Committee on the Judiciary, Napolitano said: “As many Members of this Committee
recently stated at the April 30th immigration subcommittee hearing, the status
quo is unacceptable. I look forward to working with this committee in the future
on reforms to solve these problems.”
Napolitano declared her support of
the `Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act) of 2009`,
which was reintroduced by Senators Richard Durbin and Richard Lugar. The
proposed legislation would permit immigrant students who graduate from U.S. high
schools to stay in the country for college and later apply for citizenship. “It
seems to me that the DREAM Act is a good piece of legislation,” said
Napolitano.
Commentators have welcomed Napolitano’s stance, with the
American Immigration Lawyers Association saying the move was yet more evidence
that the Obama Administration is serious about reforming the flawed US
immigration system.
