Huge demand for Canadian visas from young Irish
January 14 2010 by Liam Clifford
There has been a “phenomenal demand” for Canadian visas that allow young people to travel and work in Canada for a year.
Irish student, youth and independent travel firm USIT says the 1,000
Canadian visas quota for the year-long working holiday programme has
been filled within just two days.
Those young people who are desperate to experience the joys of living
in Canada for a year, but who have been unsuccessful this time, are
being put on a waiting list. USIT hopes the Canadian immigration
authorities will agree to make more visas available for young Irish
people.
The popularity of working in Canada is partially being attributed to
the recession. Many under 35s are finding it hard to get jobs,
particularly those who have just graduated. As a result, young people
regard spending a year working in Canada as an opportunity not to be
missed.
Canada’s ambassador in Ireland, Patrick Binns, says the country is
considering increasing the number of working holiday visas available in
response to the high demand. The increase could be made this year,
giving more young people the opportunity to work in Canada sooner than
they may have thought.
