ID cards for skilled migrants moving to the UK through Tier 2
December 11 2009 by Liam Clifford
ID cards will now be issued for all UK visa Tier 2 applicants.
Parliament passed a regulation yesterday that will see all skilled
migrants living in the UK be issued with an ID card for foreign nationals when
they renew their UK work visa through Tier 2 of the points-based
system.
All applications for UK visas under Tier 2 made from within the
UK after 6 January will involve biometric information collection. This involves
the person having to provide a photograph and fingerprints to obtain a new
visa.
In order to increase the number of immigrants who must submit
biometric information, the UK immigration department has increased the number of
enrolment centres in the UK to 11.
People living in certain areas are
also now able to enrol their biometrics at Crown post offices on a trial walk-in
basis. Others can book appointments online or by telephone. For an extra fee,
applicants can receive a same-day decision on their UK visa extension from
several public enquiry offices.
Applicants under several other
immigration routes are already being issued with ID cards for foreign nationals.
The UK work visa holders and their dependents living in the UK with them
will receive the ID cards under the new regulations.
