The overall population of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) will reach 500,000 by 2050, according to the latest government figures.
The figures take into account Australian immigration as well as mortality and fertility and suggest the ACT will hit 350,000 next year and 400,000 in 2022.
Around a quarter of the growth will come from Australian immigration, with the majority driven by births against deaths.
"These are significant challenges represented by these numbers, but they are policy neutral," said ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope.
"It's not about whether we should slow population or seek to enhance the population, this is just our best estimate taking into account what the current factors... are."
Earlier this week the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) announced a strategic plan which sets out its direction and focus to help people emigrate to Australia over the next three years.
“It will guide the work we all do in our nation-building role, serving as a reminder that the work the department does today will have ongoing economic and social benefits that will grow and develop over many years,” said an Australian immigration spokesman.
