Student visa holders in UK

The number of approved colleges registering as student visa sponsors with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) has plummeted since the introduction of new tier 4 immigration rules.

Tough new rules that came into power at the end of March mean that students wishing to study in the UK can only do so through a UKBA approved educational institution.

Four months ago that list stood at 15,000 institutions, the latest list has shrunk to 1,500.

"We have made it clear that we will not tolerate either the fraudulent applicants trying to abuse Britain's immigration rules, or the dodgy colleges that facilitate them,” said a UKBA spokesperson.

Many educational institutions previously registered turned out to be bogus, offering little in the way of a proper education, resulting in many legitimite students arriving to study in the UK with no qualifications and bleak employment prospects.
