A female journalist, working undercover investigating a number of Australian immigration rackets, was attacked in Sydney at the weekend.

The Indian reporter was assaulted in the inner city Sydney  suburb of Ultimo as she worked on a investigation for Four Corners programme.

The programme aims to expose cases where overseas students have lost money in student Australian visa scams.

A report on ABC Online said: “The woman was subjected to threats during the making of the programme and was attacked over the weekend. Police have been notified.”

The identity of the victim has not been revealed.

The reporter was posing as someone looking to illegally buy an English language pass certificate. This is required by foreign students to enable them to live and work in Australia.

Recent public protests in Australia have drawn attention to the number of cases of overseas students, particularly Indian students, who have been victims of racial attacks.

Australia’s prime minister, Kevin Rudd, recently promised to step up security measures for Indian students across the country.
