English eases Canada immigration
The Maytree Foundation, a privately-funded Canadian charitable foundation, has released a Canadian immigration study which found that English language proficiency is the most important factor for an emigrant to Canada to successfully integrate into the Canadian labour market.
The author of the report is Naomi Alboim, Maytree Senior Fellow, and Adjunct Professor and Co-Chair, Policy Forum at the School of Policy Studies, Queen’s University.
She said that “knowledge of one of Canada’s official languages has been identified as the single most important predictor of successful labour market integration. Experience has also shown that early investments in language and employment training can lead to higher earnings.”
The Maytree Foundation analyses the Canadian government’s policies that relate to Canada immigration, diversity, integration and building civic communities.
The report on Canadian immigration was compiled following a year-long study of immigration policies conducted by academics, government and emigrant settlement workers. Language proficiency was found to be both a determining factor in a newcomer’s ability to find work in Canada and a contributing factor to overall professional success.
