More Canadian student visas for Indians

Numbers of students moving to Canada to take up courses has dramatically risen.

The number of Canadian student visas granted to young people from India has doubled in response to a successful scheme launched by the Canadian immigration department and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.

The Student Partners Program was launched in April last year with the intention of increasing the number of Canadian student visa approvals for Indian applicants looking to study at Canadian colleges.

Some 4,000 Canadian student visa applications were received from Indian students during the first nine months of the scheme.

The success of the program was announced by Tim Uppal on behalf of Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney. Kenney himself stated, “the Student Partners Program has resulted in an increase in the number of Indian students on our college campuses.”

He also outlined the advantages that overseas students bring to the country and its educational institutions, “international students bring with them new ideas and experiences and contribute both financially and culturally to the communities and institutions where they study.”

Since 1998, the number of international students studying in Canada has more than doubled to 178,000. In addition, they contribute 83,000 jobs for Canadians and CA$6.5 billion to the economy.
