More information is needed for people considering living in Australia in order to help them get work and prepare for life Down Under, according to an expert.
New figures from the Australian Statistics Bureau show that unemployment is more common among immigrants living in Australian than among the Australian population. Some 7.3 per cent of skilled migrants who are looking to work in Australia are unemployed, compared with 5.2 per cent of the rest of the Australian population.
Critics claim that the figures show that the Australian immigration department needs to be doing more to ensure the migration system in the country is working for those moving to Australia and for Australian employers.
Dimitria Groutsis, an expert on migration from Sydney University, suggested to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper that more needs to be done to ensure immigrants’ skills are being used. He explained, "We are not fully utilising the skills and vocational experience offered by people living overseas."
He continued that Australian work visa applicants need more information about the Australian labour market at the application stage. "There needs to be better information for individuals when applying in their home country for emigration to Australia about what the expectations are," he said.
