According to the results of a poll carried out by New America Media, increasing numbers of foreign mothers are choosing a US visa in order to give their children the best possible start in life.

New America Media is a collaboration between 2,500 ethnic news organisations and aims to reflect the voice of the US immigration population.

The poll found that many foreign-born women choose an American visa in order to enrich their lives and the lives of their children.

They intend to improve their English and their education and also hope to get better jobs and put their children into good schools. A typical explanation from a female immigrant is: "I want a better quality of life for my children than I had."

A spokesperson for the New Media America organisation, Laura Goode, says, "One of the primary findings of the poll that makes it so important is that women are now out-migrating men worldwide... The U.S. Census just showed that women immigrants comprise 51 percent of immigrants worldwide."

Goode says that the media coverage of US immigration suggests that it is a male-led phenomenon. However, this is not the case and, in fact, women are often leading their families to migrate abroad.

Goode says, “[the media] have really ignored the stories of women migrating to hold their families together, to give their children a better opportunity and to become more enfranchised themselves."
