The new test that has been introduced to the Australian citizenship application process is more relevant than the last, claim Australian immigration officials.

The government says that its new test, which will include questions about compulsory voting, civic rights and laws, will be much more useful than the test introduced by the former government.

Chris Evans, the Australian immigration minister, says the new test includes relevant information that will help applicants prepare for living in Australia. Therefore, studying for the test will help equip applicants with useful knowledge that they need to emigrate to Australia long-term.

Evans said, "We believe the citizenship test is useful as a part of the pathway to citizenship.”

He added that the test should give people an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as Australian citizens, rather than testing them on “irrelevant [bits] of Australiana.”

The new test has been announced today, which is Australian Citizenship Day. Some 4,000 people have been granted citizenship in special ceremonies across the country to mark the occasion.

One new citizen who moved to Australia six years ago said, “It's been a dream for me because this country is just so attractive and so beautiful to me.”
