Illegal US immigration numbers slump, however Latin America still a massive influence in the country.

Numbers of illegal immigrants in the US has fallen by 7% compared to last year, a report by US immigration and Homeland Security claims.

The number now lies at around 10.7million, although this is a highly contentious and unproven number

Most of the United States illegal immigrants are from Latin America, accounting for around 82% of all illegal’s within US borders, 6.7million from Mexico, just over 62% - and those from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras making up around 2million.

The report states, "The number of unauthorised residents declined by 1.0 million between 2007 and 2009, coincident with the US economic downturn."
Interestingly, according to the report, there are currently over 31million foreign nationals living in the United States, both legally and illegally.

US immigration states that California is the state that has the worst problem with illegal immigrants, currently the figure lies at 2.6million; Texas follows with 1.7million and Florida at 720,000.

The drop is being attributed to the global economic slump and tighter border patrols at the Mexican border by US immigration.
