New York Mayor says America has to 'reach out.'

As Mayor Bloomberg of New York resumed office on New Year’s Day he pledged to continue his support for President Obama’s mission to introduce comprehensive US immigration reform.

Earlier this week during a press conference he said that calls to curb the number of people moving to the US from abroad were “stupid”, adding that restrictionist immigration laws were tantamount to “national suicide.”

He added, “somehow or other, after 9/11 we went from reaching out and trying to get the best and the brightest to come here, to trying to keep them out. In fact, we do the stupidest thing - we give them educations, and then don't give them green cards.”

He is referring to an issue that has also recently riled West Coast technology companies. This is the fact that foreign students are able to study in the US at some of its greatest universities, but are then sent home without being encouraged to work in the US.

As a result of his strong views on US immigration policy, on New Year’s Day he promised to help President Obama to “assemble a bi-partisan coalition" to support his call for "comprehensive immigration reform that honors our history, upholds our values, and promotes our economy.”
