During a speech at Washington DC's American University last week, President Obama took the opportunity to talk about the huge benefits US immigration has brought to the country.
He told listeners that waves of people moving to the US from
countries like Ireland, Italy, Poland and China over the years have brought
massive economic benefits. Despite the fact that many faced discrimination, US
immigration has not dried up, as more and more people chase the elusive American
Dream.
Now, the president is hoping to introduce major US immigration
reform, which will give immigrants living in the US a route to citizenship.
Obama says this is necessary to ensure the US remains competitive, while other
industry experts believe more needs to be done to make sure US talent does not
move abroad. There is also a fear that more needs to be done to make the US
attractive to economic migrants.
Vivek Wadhwa, the Director of Research
at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Research Commercialization at Duke
University, told TechCrunch that the US needs to do more to remain competitive.
He explained that other growing economies such as China and India are
increasingly attractive to IT specialists and that the US may soon struggle to
attract the talent it has previously taken for granted.
