UK immigration officials are under fire after refusing UK entry visas for a business delegation and pipe band from Pakistan.

The Lahore Pipe Band – known as Patiala - was set to take part in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow but about 30 of their members were declined UK visas. A trade delegation from Lahore, which is twinned with Glasgow, were also refused entry visas.

The BBC reported that the UK Border Agency turned down UK visa applications for almost all of those applying for visits to Glasgow from three Pakistani groups.

Criticism for the ruling has come from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council representatives.

Councillor Hanzala Malik who represents the Hillhead area said:

"The situation is ludicrous and the applications being approved or turned down are simply not consistent.

"The city has lost out on important meetings and income as a result of this error."

The Lahore Pipe Band has attended the World Pipe Band Championships held in Scotland for the past consecutive four years. Over 8,000 pipers from 16 countries attend the event.

Ian Embelton, CEO  of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, said: "We are very disappointed if any bands are unable to compete at the worlds - especially a band that has been so colourful and entertaining."

A UK Border Agency spokesperson said: "All applications for entry clearance are considered on their individual merits, taking into account all evidence submitted and in accordance with the UK immigration rules.

"The onus is on UK visa applicants to supply the necessary evidence in support of their applications.

"Where insufficient evidence is provided visa applications may be refused, though the individual is able to apply again at any time and any new evidence will be considered."
