Canadian minister for Immigration, Jason Kenney, announces plans for immigrants to receive language courses.
Language training vouchers are to be handed to every person emigrating to live in Canada from this autumn, in an attempt to help them settle in Canada and into their local communities.
“Whatever we can do to help newcomers take language training is a step in the right direction,” says Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney, who adds, “speaking English or French is key to finding meaningful employment and successfully integrating into Canadian society.”
The project is intended to encourage newcomers to take part in a range of settlement programmes that have been launched in recent years to help immigrants integrate and become successful members of Canadian society.
The handing out of the language training vouchers is part of a pilot scheme for people emigrationg to Canada that will run for 18 months. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the project will take place in 2011.
Language skills are seen as one of the most important factors in finding work after moving to Canada from another country. The Canadian government are spending millions of dollars on settlement schemes to help people emigrating to Canada to make the most of their skills and find jobs that suit them. The schemes also help newcomers to integrate with others in their communities.
