Jason Kenney improves Canada visa card
Canadian immigration and multi-culturalism Minister, Jason Kenney, has announced a redesign of the permanent residency card for people who have made the move to Canada from abroad.
The new design includes extra security features, which make the cards more difficult to copy. These features include fine line pattern and micro-lettering, which are currently found on banknotes.
Minister Kenney said, “Thanks to state-of-the-art security features, this redesigned permanent resident card will help prevent the fraudulent use of Canada's immigration documents and protect the integrity of our immigration system.”
Current permanent residents who have already started to live and work in Canada will be issued with the new card when their current card expires, but new permanent residents will received the new cards at the point of application.
Kenney said the new security features are a necessary addition to the cards.
He added: "The new card contains security features that comply with international standards for travel documents. Technology is continuously evolving and it is important that our standards keep up."
The resident card allows permanent residents to re-enter Canada after travelling abroad. In light of this, residents need to check they don’t need a new card before they travel.
