Plans for new immigration detention facility near Gatwick turned down

No need for a new UK immigration deportation unit say Crawley Council.

Proposals to renovate an old hotel near Gatwick airport into a UK immigration custody and deportation centre have been turned down.

The company, Arora Management Services, had asked for authorisation to adapt the existing Mercure Hotel into a new detention facility.

It was refused by planning officials from Crawley Borough Council because ‘there was no established need for the centre.

Currently Gatwick airport has two UK immigration facilities within it’s vicinity.

Residents around the proposed centre had voiced concerns over the renovation as most felt a facility enclosed by a high security fence would be detrimental to the area.
