City of London might attract UK visa holders to fill jobs

UK visas may solve skills shortage

A new survey by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and KPMG, has found that skills shortages are still very much a problem in the capital despite changes to the UK immigration system and unemployment levels.

Some 40% of London’s businesses claim they find it difficult to recruit the right talent to fill their vacancies. Despite this, businesses still feel that London is a good place to do business and many are beginning to feel more positive about the coming six months.

Although there are growing concerns that the skills shortage may slow London’s recovery, attracting skilled migrants to apply for a UK visa may remain one of the most viable solutions to the problem.

Several industries are particularly feeling the pinch of the skills shortage. Some 56% of managers in the transport sector said they are having problems filling vacant roles, while 52% of businesses in the energy/manufacturing/construction industries reported similar problems. Half of all firms in the hospitality/retail/leisure industries also reported skills shortages.

The London chairman of KPMG, Richard Reed, said it is important that skilled workers are available to firms to hire once the recession is over, “businesses will start hiring again and they must have access to staff equipped with both basic and more advanced skills."
