Polish immigrants remain living in the UK claims professor
January 22 2010 by Liam Clifford
Poles are not returning to their country in the amounts claimed by UK immigration.
A
Polish professor and expert on immigration claims that Polish people continue to
live in the UK despite claims that they are returning to their
homeland.
The Migration Policy Committee found that 1.5 million people
from Poland have moved to the UK since 2004, but added that more than half of
these people had now returned to Poland.
Prof. Krystyna Iglicka, based at
Warsaw’s Centre for International Affairs, says Poland has seen no evidence of
the UK immigration figure or the proposed stream of Polish people returning from their life in the UK to re-establish their
homes in Poland.
Iglicka says, "from our side this is not true. We do not
see them here; we do not see them in any other different countries."
She
adds that only 22,000 Polish people have registered benefits owned abroad at
Polish labour offices. The Professor’s own estimate is that a million Polish
immigrants are still living in the UK.
Polish immigrants who decided to
live and work in the UK after joining the EU have significantly boosted the UK
labour market and have filled gaping skills shortages in industries including
construction and transport.
