According to a recent poll carried out by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, a third of Mexicans would happily move to the US if they had the chance.

According to the poll, 57 per cent of Mexicans living in Mexico think that their counterparts who decided to emigrate to US enjoy better lives as a result. This figure has increased from 51 per cent in 2007. This shows that the recession has done little to dampen the desire among Mexicans to move north of the border.

Mexican resident Jose Andres Castillo said that the opinions held about what it is like to live in the US come from what people have heard through communication with individuals in their communities and with family members. He explained, "people hear about how life is here, and hear that — even though there's crisis here — life is a little better."

A poll result that will be concerning for US immigration officials found that 18 per cent of those questioned would move to the US without a US visa.

The main issues that Mexicans have with their own country include crime, corruption, drugs and a poor economy where job opportunities are scarce.
