Practical skills most valued in foreigners looking to work in Australia

If you want to live and work in Australia become a plumber.
According to a recent article in the Economic Times, skills
like carpentry and plumbing are the most beneficial for people who want to move
to Australia.
Some prospective migrants may presume that management and
other high-level or specialist skills would be the best with which to arm
oneself. However, in reality, Australia is suffering a shortage of practically
skilled people, to carry out jobs in manual and technical jobs like construction
and electrics.
The director of Melbourne-based Ind Aus Business Links
Ltd, Saian John, says, "there is a huge shortage of technically qualified
manpower in the fields of painting, carpentry, brick laying (mason) and plumbing
and electricians. Not only would one get a PR after a two-year course in any of
these disciplines, but also get a handsome monthly income.”
John’s firm
provides consultancy services to Indian students hoping to gain Australian
student visas. He says the waiting list for these has recently increased to
around two months. He says that gaining practical skills that are in short
supply in Australia is a good way for students to secure permanent residency and move to
Australia.
He adds that Indian students who complete management courses
like the MBA would not struggle to gain an Australian visa to remain in
Australia permanently.
