Gregory Dell'Omo backs study visas

Gregory Dell'Omo, the president of Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, says that in order to face the realities of the global economy going forward, students can gain a valuable insight by studying abroad.

As developing countries continue to grow and their economies become stronger, competing more effectively with Western countries, local professionals who have spent time studying abroad on a student visa will have an advantage, says Dell’Omo.

Accoridng to research carried out by the Academy of Management Journal, CEOs who have had experience in working or studying abroad outperformed those who have stayed in their own country. In fact, firms are increasingly looking for people who have trained or studied overseas as these people often have cultural and language skills which help their companies to compete in the international marketplace.

US corporations lose an estimated $2 billion a year because they lack international expertise, according to a study published by the Committee for Economic Development in 2006.

It is not only beneficial for US students to study abroad but for students from the UK, the Far East, Africa and Europe to study and work in the US, as this can gain them a very high quality education and the opportunity to work in the US after graduating.
