Record numbers of foreign students are studying in the US

Never mind the recession, students are still flocking to the US to study.
The new
Open Doors study shows that there is a record number of young people from abroad
studying in the US.
The figures from the leading account of international
students in the US show that the recession has done little to reduce the
appetite for US visas among foreign students.
Some 670,000
international students were found to be currently living in the US. This adds to
a pattern of growth over the past three years and also marks the highest number
of overseas students since 1980.
“More secure borders and ongoing
openness are not mutually exclusive, and I think the success the United States
is experiencing in attracting students from around the world proves this point,”
according to the Director of the Student Exchange and Visitor Programme (SEVP),
Lou Farrell. The SEVP is part of US Immigration and Customs
Enforcement.
As part of the measures to help improve security in the
student visa arena, customs introduced the Student and Exchange Visitor
Information System (SEVIS). This provides real-time management of records of
students, their programmes, their dependents and any visitors that may come and
visit them on a US visa at any point.
