Records show increase in Australian visa rejections

New statistics show that Australia rejected 1/3 of student visas.

Australian immigration authorities have tightened the student visa procedures to restrict those unable to meet the high costs involved.

According to the latest statistics, Australian immigration refused admission to over one-third of Indian students who applied to educational institutions in the country between July and October 2009. This was mainly due to documentation fraud.

Overestimation of cash funds accounted for the majority of frauds.

The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship reported that it turned down 33.2 per cent of the 21,120 student Australian visa applications, between July 1 and October 31, 2009 - a substantial rise from 6.5% in the corresponding period in 2008.

The high-level of refusals is a direct effect of the new stringent checks imposed by the immigration department after education-providers and reports in the media raised concerns about the processing of Australian visas.
