Migrant workers in East Cheshire, England are set to benefit from a new government-funded welfare scheme.

The programme, which is being run by the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, intends to train migrant workers to provide safety advice and support in their communities. The project will also include schemes such as welfare and housing advice, translation services and employment help.

Thousands of people have made the move to the UK from Poland, India and other countries over the past few years and the £500,000 government funding intends to help immigrants settle in the UK and help them find jobs and homes.

The money will come from the National Migration Impacts Fund and will be used for UK immigration schemes in all of East Cheshire’s Local Strategic Partnerships. It will also go towards similar programmes throughout the country.

Mark Cashin, from the Fire and Rescue Service Community Risk Reduction department, says, “People who have recently migrated to our area tend to be more at risk and establishing specialist community safety advocates will improve their safety and also help them to access local services.”
