Salary rises expected for Australian visa holders working in technology
February 24 2010 by Liam Clifford
Data from Australia’s largest IT recruitment company indicates that the industry will experience a skills shortage by the middle of the year and this will result in higher salaries.
The study could be
good news for people seeking Australian work visas, as the country operates an
immigration policy based on filling skills gaps.
Peoplebank’s study
looked at salaries and contracts rates across the technology sector. The company
predicts there will be a rise in staff turnover in the coming months as
employees leave permanent roles to pursue contract work. This will open up
vacancies for qualified employees from overseas who want to live and work in
Australia.
Although there has not yet been much of an increase on last
year’s salary rates, the report found there was strong growth in the number of
appointments. The states of Victoria and New South Wales may soon have to pay
above market rates to attract good staff, given the choices available to
Australian work visa holders as well as local candidates.
Demand for
permanent roles has increased by 20% in those states compared with January last
year. Business analysts with banking experience are particularly in demand in
Victoria and New South Wales, and could soon be paid a salary increase of 8-10%
annually.
The data supports an earlier study by Hudson ICT which
predicted a sharp rise in technology recruitment in 2010. More than 40% of
employers surveyed said they expected to increase their employees’ salaries this
year.
