Gap years on the increase
An increasing number of graduates from Scottish universities are opting for working holiday visas to Australia as they find it more difficult to get good jobs at home.
According to a study by the Year Out Group, the number of Scots taking a gap year to take on voluntary work abroad has increased by 50% in the last year alone.
As the economy continues to struggle and jobs are scarce, many 18-30 students and graduates feel they are better off taking time out to work in Australia, New Zealand or Europe for a year.
Some lucky graduates are receiving pay of up to £5,000 from future employers to take a gap year and return to them 12 months later, once the economy has picked up. Legal firm Dundas & Wilson is one such company that has confirmed it will be paying for recruits to work abroad for a year.
Graduates and students aged 18-30 are able to apply for a temporary Australian work visa, which will entitle them to take jobs in Australia and travel around the country for up to 12 months.
