Senior Tory MP supported on UK immigration view

Immigration must come down drastically if the population is to not hit 85million by 2030, claims Tory MP for Mid-Sussex.

A Senior Tory MP has today claimed that the annual immigration rate into the UK must be slashed by three-quarters if the population in the UK stands any chance of not reaching the 70million mark by 2030.

The MP for Mid-Sussex, Nicholas Soames, says that the current Government and many Ministers are in ‘denial’ about the current immigration situation in the UK. He even goes as far as saying that the current level of inward migration will see the population reaching 85million by 2030.

Mr Soames told MPs; “The only way to limit our population is to get immigration down very substantially. Indeed it must be reduced from last year's 160,000 to 40,000 or less if we are to avoid a population of 70 million.”

“Failure to bring immigration under control means a continually growing population, well beyond 70 million, even to 80 or 85 million in the latter part of the century.”

Mr. Soames was airing his views on the subject at a debate in Parliament's Westminster Hall; his rhetoric, in which he highlighted the effect UK immigration was having on schools, social housing and public services, was supported by both Tory and Labour MPs.

The subject of immigration is being raised more so now by the main political parties as a general election date looms. It is feared if it is not adequately addressed then fringe parties such as the BNP will benefit.
