Some Indian students finding it hard to get work in the UK
January 28 2010 by Liam Clifford
A section of students studying on UK visa from India are finding it difficult to find work to finance their time living in the UK.
Many are in "financial ruin"
according to the BBC’s Asian Network, which claims students are having to get
free meals from a Sikh Gurdwara in West London simply to feed
themselves.
The President of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in
Southall, Didar Singh Randawa, says the number of people coming along to worship
and eating the free meals has soared recently.
Although the young people
from India have to attend college classes to fulfill the criteria of their UK
student visas, many of them want to work in the UK as a priority. However, they
are finding it increasingly hard to find work and are often being exploited by
employers when they do, they claim.
Mr Randawa has urged other Indian
students to think hard before applying for their UK student visas with the
intention of finding work. He said, "there are no jobs and, if you want to come
to study, please make sure you have sufficient funds with you for at least six
months.”
