Malusi Gigaba on South African immigration
Deputy Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba yesterday in Johannesburg stated the urgency of effectively managing South African immigration.
Gigaba made the speech at the Independent Development Trust's (IDT) conference. He said the country faced an increase of people coming to live and work in South Africa which should be managed rather than resisted.
He said: "International migration must be managed rather than combated and must be viewed as a development potential, rather than a nuisance.
"Migration is vital for South Africa's economic development, her integration into Africa and for the enhancement of her cultural and national diversity," he said.
The minister urged a balance between the economic and security needs of the country and its neighbours. He added:
"Properly managed, immigration will positively contribute to South Africa's development, reduce security challenges, including those caused by cross-border crimes, and eliminate stereotypes and negative attitudes towards immigrants and immigration."
