South African visa changes could further encourage Nigerian investment
December 22 2009 by Liam Clifford
Numbers of Nigerians working in South Africa are up, as are South African visa numbers.
The CEO of the South Africa-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce,
Diana Games, has said that South African companies are more interested in the
Nigerian market than they were last year.
Despite the recession, South
African firms increased their interest and involvement in the Nigerian business
market this year. She added that although there had been talk of blocks on
Nigerians investing in South Africa, they were isolated cases and in fact many
firms had invested in the country and had employed South Africans.
A
greater number of Nigerians are now working in South Africa but Games says that
a clearing of the ‘bottleneck’ forming for South African visas would be
beneficial to both nations. Games explained that the future is bright for South
African businesses that keep an open mind about the Nigerian market and allowing
Nigerians to work in South Africa. She said, "although it is mostly not the big
corporations investing here at this stage, partly due to major competition in
this market, particularly in the banking sector, there is a significant number
of Nigerians living and working here, some of them for South Africa’s biggest
corporations.”
