Move to South Africa for gap year travel

South Africa is now the top destination for young people looking for affordable adventure on gap years, according to new figures from the Year Out Group.

The firm, which helps young people organise their year of travel, living and working in South Africa, Australia, Canada and other destinations, says its new figures show South Africa is now the top choice for gappers.

Richard Oliver, the firm’s chief executive says, “There are various reasons including a still-favourable exchange rate for the rand, and the sheer range of different gap-year options to choose from.”

In terms of volunteer work in South Africa for gap year students, the choices are endless. Many people choose to work on environmental projects in game reserves, others work in the healthcare centres or help orphaned children. The organisation found that a move to Canada for a gap year is the second most popular option for young people.

Overall, the gap year industry is booming despite the recession. Student travel specialist STA Travel says the fact that travel is cheaper than ever has resulted in the growing popularity of gap year travel. Living and working in Australia is another popular choice, as it is easy to gain a working holiday visa allowing for freedom to work in temporary jobs while travelling around the country.
