Taiwanese must provide ID and travel plans
The UK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reminded Taiwanese nationals of the requirements they must fulfil to obtain visa-free travel to the UK.
Taiwanese tourists do not need a UK visa for visits of up to six months, but other documents are still required and Taiwanese nationals who fail to provide them will not be able to enter the country.
Anne Hung, director-general of the ministry's Department of European Affairs, was quoted in the Taipei Times as saying that several incidents had been reported to her office of Taiwanese nationals being turned away at the UK border: "Though Taiwan citizens enjoy visa-free entry to the UK, they still need to follow related requirements when entering the country, such as bringing necessary documents related to the purpose of their visits."
As part of a new visa waiver initiative introduced in March this year, Taiwanese citizens do not need a UK visa to enter the country but they must still provide several forms of identification and proof of their travel itineraries in Britain. If they do not, they could be refused entry.
UK immigration authorities are said to be on high alert for Chinese nationals using Taiwan as a porthole for illegally entering the country without a UK visa.
