The baby boom fuelled by UK immigration will come at a cost of more than £1bn for building new schools, research has revealed.

New primary schools must be built and existing ones developed to accommodate the estimated 50,000 increase in the number of children born to parents from outside the UK.

In five years, officials will raise the entry age for school children to the highest it has been in 16 years.

An estimated £1bn will be needed to build the schools and it will cost about £200m annually to run them.

The research was carried out by think tank Migrationwatch UK and the Cross Party Group of Balanced Migration. Both are conservative organisations which actively lobby for tighter UK immigration controls.

MPs Nicholas Soames and Frank Field, who chair the group, said "This research illustrates how uncontrolled immigration is directly affecting ordinary families.

Today's research highlights primary school places but the same applies to health, housing and other services."
