UK immigration staff to strike
After the failure of talks to work out an agreement that satisfied all parties, UK immigration staff staff have announced they will strike on Wednesday, causing potential havoc at the UK’s airports.
People travelling to and from the UK for holidays and those moving to the UK permanently or coming to work in the UK are likely to face delays due to the strike, which is being organised by the Public and Commercial Service union.
The dispute with the UK Border Agency involves some 1,200 staff who are unhappy about their working conditions. They are opposed to plans to merge customs and immigration controls with the UK Border Agency. They claim the change will lead to staff members being asked to work shift patterns that they did not sign up for when taking their jobs.
The union says it will make a final decision on the strike action on Tuesday when it plans to ballot some 4,000 staff on whether to stage the walk-out.
People travelling to the UK are also likely to face delays as a result of planned action by British Airways baggage staff later in the summer.
