UK immigration officials criticised over bonuses

Civil servants working for the UK Border Agency received £15 million in bonuses over 5 years.
Whitehall figures released today reveal that UK immigration officials received more than £15 million in bonuses.
The taxpayer-funded payments were made to UK Border Agency staff since 2005.
Critics have accused the government of rewarding workers for repeated failures given the huge criticism the Labour party has come under regarding their UK immigration policies.
Liberal Democrat, Chris Huhne said yesterday: “With millions of pounds being handed out to senior civil servants year after year, it’s clear the extreme bonus culture is not just the preserve of the bankers.”
“At a time when unemployment is rising and people across the country are forced to cope with pay freezes and cuts, it’s galling to see such enormous sums paid out to Government mandarins.”
Minister for UK immigration Phil Woolas defended the bonuses saying: “Frontline officers for the UK Border Agency work around the clock to protect our borders both here and overseas."
