UK work visa and passport among belongings found after fire

A Canadian couple who are moving to the UK have rescued a passport and UK visa from the remains of their Ottawa apartment after it was ravaged by a fire.

Amanda Racine and Gavin Hall are moving to the UK on Wednesday and returned to their apartment in the hope that their packed suitcases had survived the fire and, to their surprise, they discovered Ms. Racine’s “London file”, which contained her UK work visa and her passport. Other than their bathroom sink, however, little remained of the couple’s former home, as the structure had been demolished by a mechanical shovel on Saturday afternoon.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Racine. “I found my passport and work visa in the rubble. We were shocked.”

There was no sign of Mr. Hall’s passport, so he has applied to the British High Commission for an emergency passport. Mr. Hall is a UK citizen at the end of a one-year Canadian work visa.

Eight other people were left homeless after the fire, which is under investigation by Canadian authorities.

Amanda Racine and Gavin Hall plan to work in the UK for at least a year.
