US immigration: 20,000 H-1B visas still available

April 29 2009 by Gareth McConnell

U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) have announced only 45,000 H-1B visa petitions counting towards the 65,000 limit have been filed since 1st April.

The much sought after US visas for highly skilled professionals have witnessed a decline in popularity since the financial downturn leaving many US businesses without key staff, traditionally in the IT and financial sectors.

“The agency continues to accept petitions subject to the general cap,” said a USCIS spokesperson.

Due to regulations involved in financial bailout packages, US companies are prevented from hiring overseas workers if they received a federal grant, resulting in not as many companies applying for H-1B visa petitions this year.
