US immigration announces extension of religious worker visa scheme
May 05 2009 by Liam Clifford
The US immigration department has published a statement that reminds people working in the US as non-ministers, but in religious lines of work, that the 'special immigration religious worker program' has been extended to 29 September 2009.
The programme initially expired on 6 March 2009 but an extension was signed by President Obama on 20 March 2009, which affects workers of a professional or non-professional capacity who are working in a religious vocation or occupation. It also affects their spouses and dependents.
Religious workers can continue to submit forms l-360, l-485 and l-824 until 30 September under the extension programme. However, the department says it will not process any further US work visa applications using the above-listed forms after this date.
Form I-360 is the Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er) or Special Immigrant. Form I-458 is the Applications to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status and form I-824 is the Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition.
Any non-ministerial religious workers living and working in the US can continue to apply using these forms until the programme has expired on 30 September 2009.
