Schumer on US immigration
Democrat Senator, Chuck Schumer, says that the new US immigration bill will be ready by Labour Day.
He said, "I think the fundamental building blocks are in place to do comprehensive US immigration reform." He added that the bill will reflect his pro-immigration view, helping to encourage legal immigrants to move to the US. He also said the bill should identify a path to citizenship for people who have been living in the US for a long time but remain unregistered.
Shumer’s current view is that more US work visas should be made available for highly skilled immigrants to work in the US in ‘in demand’ industries such as engineering and says the bill should reflect this.
Shumer says that US visa policies may have to differ depending on shortages in the labour market for different industries. He says, "I think one of the ways to bridge it is to look at the different areas of labor and where there are shortages and where there are not…I think if you look at each broad field you can see that one size does not fit all."
