US immigration is beneficial to entrepreneurial sector

In the face of spreading swine flu in the US, some are blaming immigrants for the dispersal of the disease, but it is important to remember that certain sectors, particularly the entrepreneurial sector, would be lost if foreigners stopped coming to work in the US.
A piece in US News has highlighted the need for immigrants to keep the country moving, even during a potential pandemic. The article sites a report carried out by Jennifer Hunt, which used statistics from the National Survey of College Graduates. The report found that people in the country on US work visas or student visas are more likely than US citizens to start their own company, thus creating jobs for others.
These start-ups are often based on the technical knowledge that these immigrants develop during master and doctoral degrees.
The US News article, by Matt Bandyk, pointed out that Hunt found no such trend among immigrants living in the US on permanent skilled worker visas for starting businesses. He suggests that this exposes the difficulties skilled immigrants face when applying for the permanent work visas, instead often opting for the less complicated temporary work visa option.
