US immigration reform will be a reality says the Homeland Security Secretary

November 17 2009 by Liam Clifford

New immigration reform by 2010 says Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Legislation to legalise the 12million illegal immigrants in the U.S. could be just around the corner claims the Homeland security secretary. Napolitano has assured a policy group in Washington DC that President Obama still has U.S. immigration reform at the top of his priorities.

Concerns were raised that the issue had taken a back seat after it appeared to have been dropped from the Presidents schedule in favor of Healthcare and the conflict abroad. But Napolitano’s speech, at the Center for American Progress, reiterated President Obama’s commitment to US immigration policy changes.

She said that this was ongoing but insisted that where the bill had failed in 2007 this was an altogether different case for reform, giving examples of how security has and will be increased at the borders, she also said the administrations decision to force the issue of immigration reform for Congressional action was made months ago.
